You just need 20 minutes to create the most amazing cocktail for your guests—a Blueberry Mojito. They are light, fresh, fruity, and have a sparkling effervescence courtesy of club soda.

I love a good mojito (these Mango Mojitos are a reader favorite). Using fresh fruit really is the best way to turn a regular mojito into something even more delicious!

What’s in a mojito?

A traditional mojito contains white rum, limes, fresh mint, a sweetener (such as simple syrup), and club soda.

For this recipe, we’ll add blueberries to create a gorgeous purple-hued cocktail for a spin on a classic mojito.

Blueberry mojito ingredients

  • You can use fresh or frozen blueberries. If you’re using frozen blueberries, defrost them first in the refrigerator overnight.
  • White rum is the alcohol of choice. Avoid dark rum as it will muddy the color of the cocktail.
  • Water and sugar will create a simple syrup to sweeten the drink.
  • Limes and fresh mint are the traditional flavors of a mojito.
  • Club soda adds bubbles—a must for a mojito!

How to make simple syrup

Place sugar and water in a small saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, give it a stir, and then remove from the heat.

You just made simple syrup! Let it cool. Placing it in the refrigerator will speed this along.

How to make a pitcher of blueberry mojitos

Remove the mint leaves from the stems. Then, cut each limes into 8 wedges.

Place the mint leaves and lime wedges in a large pitcher. Use a muddler to smash the lime wedges until they release their juice. The smashing will also release the flavor of the mint.

If you don’t have a muddler, use the back of a wooden spoon or a meat mallet. I thought using a meat mallet was the fastest method since it has more surface area than a wooden spoon handle.

Pour in the blueberries and smash those, too. You don’t have to smash every single blueberry—some can be left whole.

Pour in the cooled simple syrup and rum. If you’re making these ahead, stop here and refrigerate the mixture for up to 4 hours.

If you’re serving them right away, pour in the club soda.

Which rum is best for mojitos?

Traditionally, white rum is used for mojitos. A mid-priced brand, such as Bacardi, works very well.

If you don’t have rum, vodka can be used in a pinch!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make a mojito without alcohol?

To make a mojito into a mocktail, replace the rum with water or club soda.

What type of mint is best for a mojito?

Use fresh spearmint or fresh peppermint to make a mojito. In the U.S., most plants labeled as mint are either spearmint or peppermint.

What can I use in place of a muddler?

Traditionally, a muddler or pestle is used to muddle limes and mint for a mojito. If you don’t have either of those, use the end of a wooden spoon or even a meat mallet if you have a lot of ingredients to muddle.

Make it ahead

You can make Blueberry Mojitos ahead of time, saving you valuable time at your next gathering!

Follow the instructions in the recipe, and refrigerate the mixture before you add the club soda.

When you’re ready to serve, pour in the club soda and serve. (Otherwise, it’ll lose its fizz if you pour it in ahead of time).

Ingredients

  • cup sugar
  • cup water
  • cup fresh mint, plus more for garnish
  • 4 limes (3 for the pitcher, plus one for garnish)
  • 2 cups blueberries, fresh or frozen (defrost if frozen)
  • cups white rum
  • 4 cups club soda (about 1 liter)

Instructions

  • Place the sugar and the water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, stir, and then remove from the heat. Let cool completely (put it in the refrigerator to speed this along). This is the simple syrup.
  • Remove the mint from the stems. Slice three of the limes into eight sections each.
  • Place the mint and the lime sections into a large pitcher. Use a pestle, wooden spoon, or meat mallet to crush the mint leaves and the limes. Make sure to crush each of the lime sections until they release their juice.
  • Add the blueberries and crush those, too. It doesn’t have to be perfect—some of the blueberries can still be whole.
  • Pour in the rum and the simple syrup from step 1. Stir to combine. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  • When ready to serve, stir the club soda into the pitcher. Cut the remaining lime into eight wedges.
  • Place ice in each individual glass and pour the blueberry mojito mixture over the top.
  • Garnish with a lime wedge and more mint. Serve immediately.

Notes

You can use either spearmint or peppermint for the fresh mint. Spearmint has a sweeter taste and peppermint has a stronger mint flavor. I used spearmint here. Either one will be delicious.
Use whichever brand of white rum (also called silver rum or light rum) that you prefer. I used Bacardi. Avoid using dark rum, as the color will muddy the gorgeous purple hue of this cocktail. Dark rum also has a stronger taste that we don’t want here.
Make this a mocktail by substituting regular water or club soda for the rum.
