French Onion Soup Burgers
A packet of Lipton french onion soup mix is the secret ingredient in these juicy, flavorful burgers.
Ingredients
- 1 packet french onion soup mix (such as Lipton)
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ½ cup dry breadcrumbs
- 2 lbs ground beef (I use 85% lean)
- To serve: burger buns, cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup

Instructions
- Preheat an outdoor grill over medium-high heat, or preheat a grill pan over medium heat on the stovetop.
- In a large bowl, stir together the onion soup mix, mayo, and breadcrumbs. It will form a thick paste.
- Add the ground beef, and gently mix with your hands or a spatula until combined. Avoid overmixing, which can make the burgers tough.
- Shape into 6 or 8 burger patties, depending on how big you like them. (If this is too many, you can freeze some of them uncooked.)
- Grill for 5–7 minutes per side, until cooked to your desired doneness. For cheeseburgers, add a slice of cheese to the patties about a minute before you take them off the grill.
- Serve right away on buns with your favorite toppings.
Notes
You can also use 80% or 90% lean ground beef. I like 85% lean because it creates a juicy burger without flaring up too much on the grill.
You can make the burgers on an outdoor grill, an indoor grill, or even smashed into smashburgers on a griddle. Delicious any way!
I like spreading the buns with a thin layer of mayo before toasting or grilling them. The mayo helps the bun toast evenly without burning, and it adds a richness that can't be beat.
