A packet of french onion soup mix is an easy way to jazz up ground beef! These French Onion Soup Burgers are juicy, flavorful, and packed with rich onion flavor.

Burgers are one of those dinners I know everyone in my family will happily eat, so I’m always looking for easy ways to change them up without adding a lot of extra work.
Leave it to Lipton to find yet another use for its famous French onion soup mix. I’ve used it in everything from no peek chicken to French onion potatoes and beef stew. I think soup might be the only thing I haven’t made with it!
These French Onion Soup Burgers are incredibly juicy, thanks to a little mayonnaise mixed into the beef, and the soup mix adds plenty of savory onion flavor. They’re quick to make and perfect for a summer dinner, topped with lettuce, tomato, and all your favorite burger fixings. I’ve made them both on the grill and as smash burgers on an indoor griddle, and they’ve turned out delicious each time.

Why You’ll Love this recipe
- The flavor! The onion soup mix takes burgers from plain to special. If you like french onion chip dip, you’ll love these burgers.
- You can use any ground beef that you like (80%, 85%, or 90% lean).
- The recipe makes 6–8 burgers. If that’s too many for your liking, you can freeze some of the patties before grilling. They freeze nicely and I especially enjoy making burgers once and eating them twice!
Ingredients

- The ground beef is flavored with the onion soup mix (use any variety you like: onion, beefy onion, etc.). Lipton is the most common brand or store brand works well too.
- The patties are held together with mayo and breadcrumbs. Any dry breadcrumbs work well here (plain, Italian seasoned, etc.).
How to Make French Onion Soup Burgers
- Mix the french onion soup mix with the mayo and breadcrumbs.
- Add the ground beef and gently mix to combine. I find that my hands are the best tools for this.
- Form into 6–8 patties and grill with the lid closed for 5–7 minutes.
- Flip and continue cooking until your desired doneness is reached.
Tips to Keep In Mind When Making Burgers
- An over-mixed burger is a tough burger. Mix the ground beef gently with your hands and shape the patties using your palms with a light touch—firm enough so they hold together but not super packed together.
- I find that 80% lean beef flares up a lot on the grill, so I like to use 85% lean beef when making burgers.
- If your grill starts to flare up, lower the heat or move the patties over indirect heat to continue cooking there. I light three of the burners on my gas grill and keep the fourth burner off for this.
- Don’t smash your burgers with a spatula. Leave them alone while cooking for the juiciest burgers.
- Toast those buns! Since the mayo is out already, I love spreading a thin layer of mayo on the inside of the buns before broiling or grilling. It adds richness and helps the buns toast up evenly golden brown. It makes them taste really good too. 🙂

The Best Side Dishes for Burgers
Fries/chips and a side salad are my go-to side dishes for burgers on busy nights, but I do love a classic picnic salad for when I have more time. Here are a few ideas:
- Grandma’s Old Fashioned Potato Salad
- Shrimp Macaroni Salad
- Red Potato Salad
- 7 Layer Salad
- Sour Cream Cucumbers

Instructions
- Preheat an outdoor grill over medium-high heat, or preheat a grill pan over medium heat on the stovetop.
- In a large bowl, stir together the onion soup mix, mayo, and breadcrumbs. It will form a thick paste.
- Add the ground beef, and gently mix with your hands or a spatula until combined. Avoid overmixing, which can make the burgers tough.
- Shape into 6 or 8 burger patties, depending on how big you like them. (If this is too many, you can freeze some of them uncooked.)
- Grill for 5–7 minutes per side, until cooked to your desired doneness. For cheeseburgers, add a slice of cheese to the patties about a minute before you take them off the grill.
- Serve right away on buns with your favorite toppings.
