This simple 5-ingredient coleslaw comes together in minutes with the help of a bag of coleslaw mix. It tastes so much better than store-bought!

A 5-Minute Slaw Recipe

When I need a quick side dish for a summer dinner, this is the Simple Coleslaw recipe that I use.

The dressing is a simple combination of mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar, and salt, tossed with a bag of coleslaw mix. From there, you can customize it with your favorite seasonings. I love adding celery seed for a classic deli-style coleslaw flavor, but garlic powder and onion powder are delicious additions, too.

I love that it comes together in minutes, and it pairs perfectly with burgers, brats, grilled chicken, pulled pork, ribs, fried chicken, and more.

Enjoy! Kate

Coleslaw Variations

There are lots of ways to adapt this coleslaw recipe based on what you have on hand. Here are some ideas:

  • Shred the cabbage yourself: one 14-oz bag of coleslaw mix is the equivalent of half of a medium sized head of cabbage.
  • Add 3-4 sliced green onions.
  • Add a handful of fresh herbs such as parsley, dill, or cilantro.
  • Want to add crunch? Try a handful of sunflower seeds, crispy bacon bits, or finely chopped walnuts. Thinly sliced celery or chopped bell pepper are good here too.
  • For the vinegar, you can use regular white vinegar, white wine vinegar, or apple cider vinegar.
  • More seasonings: add a teaspoon of garlic powder or onion powder (or both).
  • Want a little zip? Add a teaspoon of dijon mustard.
