A Thanksgiving Side with Big Citrus Flavor

I’m a bit ambivalent on whether cranberry sauce should be on the table at Thanksgiving, but it turns out I just haven’t found a recipe that I love. Until now!

This bright, fresh Cranberry Relish with Oranges and Apples has two entire oranges in it, peel and all. It delivers big citrus flavor while still keeping the cranberries as the star.

It maintains a balance of sweet and tart, and the pecans add a bit of crunch. It really levels up the cranberry sauce tradition! And, it freezes well so you can make it with plenty of time to spare before Thanksgiving dinner.

Enjoy! Kate

You’ll Need Six Ingredients

cranberries, oranges, apples, sugar, and other ingredients.
  • You can use any type of apples that you like for this. You may need a bit more sugar if you use a tart apple like Granny Smith.
  • The sugar amount is adjustable. The original recipe called for 1½ cups, but I reduced it to 1 cup. You could do anywhere between ¾ and 1½ cups, depending on how sweet you like it (and how sweet your apples are).

How to Make Cranberry Relish with Oranges and Apples

  1. Place the cranberries, apples, and oranges (including the peel) into a food processor.
  2. Pulse until finely chopped.
  3. Stir in the pineapple, pecans, and sugar.
  4. Transfer to a serving dish and enjoy!

Make Ahead Instructions

The beauty of this Cranberry Relish is that it can be made ahead of time, and the texture stays the same. You can make it up to 2 days in advance of serving, tightly covered in the fridge. You can also freeze it for 1–2 months. Defrost in the fridge for a day or two.

Instructions

  • Place the 12 oz fresh cranberries, 2 oranges and 2 apples in a food processor. Pulse until everything is finely chopped.
  • Place in a large bowl, and stir in the 1 can (8 oz) crushed pineapple, drained, ½ cup finely chopped nuts, and 1 cup granulated sugar.
  • Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Notes

If the nuts aren’t chopped already, do that first in the food processor and then stir them in with the pineapple and sugar.
Don’t like nuts? Leave them out.
You can use anywhere from ¾ cup–1½ cups sugar. I thought 1 cup was just right (I used a sweeter apple variety).
Make it ahead: you can make it up to 2 days ahead and refrigerate (the texture stays the same!), or freeze for 1–2 months.
A similar recipe I found used one whole lemon (including the peel) in place of the apples. You may need a bit more sugar if you try that variation (it sounds delicious).

    1. Is it a high-speed blender? I worry about the orange peels burning out a regular blender but I do think it would work in a Vitamix or similar high-speed blender.
