A Retro Classic

This wouldn’t be an old fashioned recipe blog at least a dozen old fashioned sweet salads! I heard from quite a few readers on Facebook that at least one of their family members really enjoys a cottage cheese gelatin salad, so I dug through my recipe books to find a few.

Many of them were lime cottage cheese salads, but this Orange Jell-O Salad with Cottage Cheese was quite popular too.

It’s fluffy, creamy, and fruity, with mandarin oranges and pineapple mixed into the very simple base of cottage cheese, orange gelatin, and whipped topping. It comes together in a flash, you can make it ahead of time, and it’s bound to bring a bit of nostalgia to your dinner table.

Just 5 Ingredients!

cool whip, mandarin oranges, pineapple, orange gelatin, and crushed pineapple.

How to Make Orange Jell-O Salad with Cottage Cheese

  1. Stir together the orange gelatin powder and cottage cheese.
  2. Fold in the whipped topping, drained pineapple, and drained mandarin oranges. (Reserve a few mandarin orange slices for garnish, if you’d like.)
  3. Pour into an 8×8 or 9×9-inch baking dish and smooth out the top.
  4. Refrigerate for at least two hours, then serve with a spoon or cut into slices.

Serving Tips and Variations

You can serve the salad cut into slices, or straight from a bowl. If you’re serving it from a bowl, put it directly into the serving bowl after you’ve stirred it all together. You’ll still want to refrigerate it for a few hours.

You can make this with any flavor of gelatin that you like (lime is a popular variation). If you’re using lime gelatin, substitute 1 cup of mini marshmallows for the mandarin oranges. You can also add ½ cup of chopped walnuts or pecans if you’d like.
