A Cookie and Candy, All In One

I grew up making the shortcut version of these Homemade Peanut Butter Blossoms, using a package of store-bought peanut butter cookie dough and a Hershey’s kiss in the center.

This recipe, however, is the true from-scratch classic, featuring a soft and chewy peanut butter cookie rolled in granulated sugar and topped with a chocolate star. The original version appeared in the 1957 Pillsbury Bake-Off under the name Black Eyed Susans, and while it has been adapted over the years, the idea remains the same: a cookie and candy in one bite.

Although Hershey’s Kisses are now the most common topping, all three recipes in my 1970s and 1980s cookbooks call for chocolate stars instead. They can be a bit harder to find today, but I was able to order them from Farm & Fleet.

Whatever candy topping you choose, these will bring a bit of nostalgia to your table!

Enjoy! Kate

Candy Ideas for the Top

Each recipe that I found in my spiral-bound church cookbooks called for chocolate stars. They’re not very popular anymore, but I found some at Farm and Fleet. If you can’t find chocolate stars, here are a few more ideas:

You could also put the balls of dough in miniature muffin tins and top with a miniature Reese’s peanut butter cup when they get out of the oven. Yum!

Notes

I found the chocolate stars at Farm and Fleet. If you can’t find them at your local grocery store, try an internet search for “chocolate star candy” to see if there are any other sources near you. If not, try one of these other ideas:
The cookies will keep for a week or two at room temperature, in a tightly covered container.
