Kate’s Recipe Rundown

If you peek into my pantry, you’ll almost always find a box of Lipton French Onion Soup Mix tucked in there.

Sure, it makes a great sour cream dip for chips (I love that dip—recipe is below!) but its real magic happens at dinnertime. The packet is a secret weapon for building deep, slow-cooked flavor without spending hours at the stove.

I’ve stirred french onion soup mix into ground beef to create juicy burgers, tossed it with potatoes for a crispy, savory side dish, and used it to create the most comforting gravies for stews and casseroles.

These right here are the no-fuss, cozy meals that someone’s mom or grandma always had in her rotation (maybe it was yours, too!).

Enjoy! Kate

Slow Cooker Meals

Beef Stew with Onion Soup Mix

This stew tastes like you’ve been cooking it all day. And you have, but the crockpot has done all the work!

Cube Steak with Gravy

My friend Jennifer’s family favorite, made by her mom for decades. (This is on Jennifer’s site, Plowing Through Life.)

Country Style Ribs with Gravy

Just four ingredients, seriously easy, and melt-in-your-mouth tender. (Another favorite from Jennifer.)

Oven Baked Classics

Pork Chop Casserole

When I need a hearty, meat-and-potatoes meal with minimal prep, this is the recipe I reach for.

Easy No Peek Chicken

No peeking while it cooks! The chicken is perfectly tender, and the crispy edges where the rice meets the pan are my absolute favorite part.

Macaroni and Ground Beef Casserole

Similar to goulash, but the onion soup mix adds a bold savory flavor. This is from my friend Carlee’s site, Cooking with Carlee.

For the Grill

French Onion Soup Burgers

A simple way to transform burgers into something special. They’re really juicy, too!

Side Dishes

French Onion Soup Potatoes

My mom cut this recipe right off the Lipton soup mix box back in the ’80s, and it’s been a staple ever since. The potatoes get so crispy!

Baked Rice with Mushrooms

Easy and flavorful—perfect for mushrooms fans. I love the idea to serve the rice with steak or beef roast. (This is also from Carlee’s site.)

Instructions

  • Stir 2 cups sour cream and 1 packet Lipton onion soup mix together.
  • Refrigerate for at least one hour to allow the onion soup mix to soften and the flavors to blend together.
  • Serve with chips (I'm partial to Ruffles).

Notes

You can make the dip a day in advance (the flavors will get even better that way). Cover tightly and refrigerate until you’re ready to serve it.
Doctor it up: Some readers suggested adding an additional 2 tablespoons of onion soup mix to the dip (from another packet) for an even bolder onion flavor. Sounds good to me! You could also doctor it up with some onion powder, parsley flakes, or garlic powder. And if you like some heat, a little cayenne pepper!
